Buhari returns from his vacation in London, Nigerians await a presidential reaction to the 2016 Budget dilemma
Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has returned to Nigeria following a six-day vacation to London in the United Kingdom.
The president had last week Friday proceeded on the short vacation after
transmitting a letter to the president of the senate and speaker of the
house of representatives to inform them he would be on vacation and
that in accordance with section 145(1) of the 1999 Nigerian
constitution, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo would act in his stead.
Adesina’s statement was in response to claims by Ekiti state governor, Ayodele Fayose, who openly challenged the president’s handlers to disclose the status of the President’s health.
Buhari’s return, a relief to his supporters, comes when criticisms of the 2016 Budget proposal he submitted to the National Assembly have grown louder. The National Assembly has also postponed the passage of the budget, citing the need for a “thorough clean-up.”
In Buhari’s absence, unnamed officials within the Presidency blamed the inflated figures in the 2016 budget on a ‘budget mafia’ within the civil service. In reaction, many public affairs analysts have called on Buhari to take full responsibility for the embarrassing budget and to sack top officials involved in its preparation.
With his return, the nation awaits Buhari’s first pronouncements and action concerning the much discussed budget.
