Non-academic staff threaten to disrupt Matriculation

The non-academic staff union of the University of Ibadan today embarks on a massive protest over the non-payment of allowances by the institution, barely a month after they paralyzed academic activities over same issue.

The executive members of the body have ordered a suspension of work forthwith, as they threaten to disrupt the Matriculation exercise for freshmen slated for 9:00 am Thursday, with some of their members already headed to Trenchard Hall to disrupt the ongoing orientation programme.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, Non-academic Staff Union, NASU, and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), gathered over 20,000 members to shut down the school gate and bar non-members from entry.

Chairman of SSANU, Comrade Wale Akinremi blamed the fracas on the ‘insensitivity’ of the Vice Chancellor, Prof Abel Idowu Olayinka, stressing that their protest would continue until the school management pays what it owes the staff.

He further alleged that men of the Department of State Security, DSS, arrested some of their members and after questioning them for some hours, released them with a condition that they must report back to the DSS office by Wednesday.

“The VC said that he would not pay us the allowance we are asking for. Some groups in the institution are asking him not to pay us what he is owing us. He said that we can close down the school if we desire. He also threatened to sack some members of non-academic staff,” he said.
