University of Ibadan shut over students protest, as crises spread in Nigerian varsities

 

A circular issued by the management of the institution on Tuesday directed students to leave their halls of residence and proceed on a long vacation, while suspending academic activities till further notice.


A student,  who simply identified herself as Sarah,  told PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday night that although the management directed that students should leave the school  by 4pm, students had refused to vacate their halls.
“I have no intention to leave my room,  but if they chase us out then I will have to go, ” she said.

A similar protest occurred at the University of Port Harcourt, where one Tunji Epketi Micheal, was expelled on November 18, 2015 for leading a protest over poor welfare on campus.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) protested that decision, and that resulted in the closure of the school.
Recently, the University of Lagos was shut down and is currently in crisis as students demanded better welfare.

Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, suffered the same fate two weeks ago, when students went on rampage in protest of the death of a fellow student knocked down by a commercial motorcycle.
The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, also suspended its students’ union government recently after students protested and demanded better welfare.
